How to keep your drains cleaner longer
By Ruben Austria
Did you know that a house or building plumbing system has air ventilation? This allows for smooth flow of water through the maze of the plumbing system. This may not be a grain but when clogged or covered it could be responsible making your drains get dirty. Dirt in pipes might be pushed back to your sinks or drain! I have experienced this and saw all the mess it did. This could also cause some solid elements to build up at a section difficult to reach. So, make sure that air vent pipe is always clean and not covered. These air vent pipes are mostly extended past the roof. Commonly, the diameter of the pipe is about 2 inches and protrudes about a foot from the roof. Some air vents are also located on one side of house if not, it might be somewhere between the ceiling and the roof. It will be good to have the plumbing system layout or diagram of the building. A symptom of a blocked air vent is when water takes more time going down the drains and toilet bowls. A gurgling sound is evident when the air vent is partially blocked causing water and air alternately flowing through the pipes. Sink, shower, bath, driveway drains have a regular perforated cover to prevent large objects getting into them. Sink covers are removable by prying on the edges. For baths and showers some are fixed or screwed onto the floor. Kitchen sinks are those that often have drain problems. It's commonly caused by cooking oil, fat, small particles of food. If much work is being done on the kitchen sink and can't help draining water with some solid particles, you can device a domed screen about the size of the drain. The domed screen will have the small particles build up around it while water freely flows through the top. That should keep the drain and the P-trap accumulate fewer solids. If solids have accumulated in the P-trap, directly located under the sink, it is easy to clean by unscrewing the cap to drain it off. After draining it off, screw back the cap and flush the P-trap. Flushing could be done with commercial drain pipe de-clogging solutions, or if there's none around, a gallon of boiling water should do it. For baths and shower drains the common cause of blockage is hair that has accumulated and has trapped other particles. It is easier to solve this with shower drains. Put over the drain a very porous sponge. Drench it first so it would not be floated away. Hair will not get past the sponge. If water accumulates on floor during a shower, momentarily lift off one side of the sponge to let water through. For bath tubs filled up with water, the domed screen will work better than the sponge. Before lifting off the plug, set in place the domed screen. Clear the screen away of trapped hair if it slows down drainage. Basement and driveway drains are least used. Likewise, it also the least having water flow through them unless the washing machine drain hose is directed there. The best way to keep them clean is put a cover when not in use. This will prevent foreign matter getting into them. All these drains will be difficult to keep clean if there are small children not aware on how they can mess them up. Watching over or supervising children while using these drains is still best
